Learn more about the best pick top 3 anime for every generation.

What is the latest Big 3 anime considered at present time?

Anime has brought storytelling to a global audience with its themes and art styles. No wonder why it’s still relevant to this day. However, the Big 3 made a name for themselves thanks to their popularity and how much of an impact it brought.

Even non-anime fans see the faces of recognizable characters without knowing their names, especially in the likes of Dragon Ball, One Piece, and Naruto.

  • Dragon Ball, together with its sequels: Z, Super, and the movies, had taken the world by storm. The intense fighting sequences, facing foes that becoming more powerful than the last, and the plot armor of power-ups, make this power fantasy a sensation to remember.
  • One Piece is an ongoing adventure that introduces a lot of colorful characters and new arcs for Luffy and his friends to explore. Saying “I finished watching One Piece” will be quite a feat.
  • Naruto, and its sequel Naruto Shippuden, have elevated the world of ninjas with their ninjutsu techniques and action. An orphan who rose to be one of the greatest ninjas and become Hokage is worth the journey to follow.

These three are so Big, that their recognition is still unmatched to this day, the creators must’ve been proud.

There were other big 3s before

From each generation, there came Big 3s as well. They brought great significance to the industry and caught the hearts of fans. I may mention them again, because it’s worth noting.

Big 3s of 90s

Dragon Ball

  • 1986 to be precise, but it had reached the year 90 with an overwhelming impact.
  • 153 eps
  • Son Goku, a fighter with a monkey tail, goes on a quest with an assortment of odd characters in search of the Dragon Balls, a set of crystals that can give its bearer anything they desire.
  • This series started it all. The epic re-telling of the Chinese Legends Journey to the West had won the attention of both fans and non-anime fans alike. Thanks to certain “power levels”, the series kicked off at whole new heights.

Yu Yu Hakusho

  • 1992
  • 112 eps
  • After a teenage delinquent named Yusuke Urameshi is killed while saving a child’s life from an approaching car, the rulers of the underworld send him back to become an “Underworld Detective” investigating demon apparitions in the human world.
  • Aside from the relationships between the four main characters and their grounded desires in life, there’s also Yusuke’s iconic Spirit Gun pose.

Rurouni Kenshin

  • 1996
  • 94 eps
  • The story is set in 11th year of the Meiji era in Japan (1878) where we follow a former assassin known as Hitokiri Battosai. After his work against the bakufu, he becomes Himura Kenshin, a wandering swordsman who protects the people of Japan with a vow never to take another life.
  • A story of a man that seemed ordinary from the outside but menacing on the inside, nevertheless, Kenshin’s journey faces humor, the unusual, and sick action.

Big 3s of 2000s

One Piece

  • 1999
  • On-going. At this point, an entire family generation may end up watching it.
  • An energetic young man named Luffy with his pirate crew hopes to find the greatest treasure of all time and become the King of the Pirates.
  • Now this is an adventure! The ongoing swash-buckling journey is grand and special thanks to Luffy’s rubber powers and his crew. Speaking of ongoing, the most memorable part of this anime is the title itself.

Naruto

  • 2002
  • 220 eps
  • Naruto Uzumaki, an orphan who lives in a world dominated by chakra and ninjas, wants to become Hokage- a high-ranking ninja title.
  • Naruto is also another orange-colored character that made its way into the hearts and minds of anime fans by mimicking the seemingly difficult hand signs and the iconic ninja run.

Bleach

  • 2004
  • 366 eps
  • Ichigo Kurosaki who gained the powers of a Soul Reaper, hunts down Hollows, corrupt spirits that seek to devour human souls along with the reaper who protected his family and his classmates.
  • Like Naruto, Bleach may suffer from a lot of filler arcs, but it’ll pay off when certain arcs give Ichigo and friends significant development. Also, who wouldn’t want to be a badass reaper with a giant sword to slay Hollows?

Big 3s of early 2010-2018

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood

  • 2009
  • 64 eps
  • Sets in the 20th century where alchemy is strongly used, two brothers, Edward and Alphonse Elric, are on a quest to find the Philosopher’s Stone to recover their bodies after a failed attempt to resurrect their brother.
  • The former number one list in the MyAnimeList, this anime sets out its power system through the course of the story. Their journey together, with thought-provoking themes such as genocide, the corruption of power, and the consequences of one’s actions, makes FAB a grounded and powerhouse of an anime.

Hunter x Hunter (2011)

  • 2011
  • 148 eps
  • Gone Freecss aspires to be a Hunter, an exceptional being capable of greatness. With his friends and his potential, he seeks out his father, who left him when he was younger.
  • HxH constructs intellectual themes that have quite an impact on future anime, such as making Gon reevaluate his perspective of things when meeting such circumstances. His emotional journey matured him along the way. And the friendship between Gon and Killua is as if we’re tagging along as well.

Attack on Titan

  • 2013
  • 25 eps
  • Eren Yeager vows to kill all the man-eating Titans after they bring destruction to his home and eat his mother.
  • Well, that’s a basic revenge premise, but it added more gore and brutality. Attack on Titan had brought the audience by storm. It draws the audience and makes them want more: Eren’s titan powers, the secret of the basement, especially… what beyond the ocean is really like.

Other top animes from every generation that deserves commendation

Sailor Moon

  • 1992
  • 200
  • Set in the 1990s, Usagi Tsukino is a teenage girl given the power to become Sailor Moon to protect Earth from evil threats thanks to a talking cat named Luna.
  • Romance, Cute uniforms, awesome transformations, colorful characters, that can fight? No wonder this popped up so much. And what’s surprising- but not unwelcome- is it shows that even “Girl power” can be at the same level as its Shonen piers.

My Hero Academia

  • 2016
  • 13 eps
  • In a world where most of the population has special abilities known as quirks, there are superheroes and villains. Izuku Midoriya wants to become one, but he was quirkless, until he met the number one hero in the world himself: All Might.
  • This is more like a re-introduction of the Shonen genre, with its cast with unique abilities and the fight between good and evil. However, along the way, there’s more than meets the eyes once the viewers get to know more about the two sides of the same coin. And Midoriya pushing his limit reminds us of a certain Saiyan wearing an orange gi.

Demon Slayer

  • 2019
  • 26 eps
  • Tanjiro and Nezuko are siblings and survivors of a demon attack. His sister suffers as she slowly becomes a demon herself, so he sets out to become a demon slayer, avenge his family, and cure his sister.
  • With the mixture of Taisho-era Japan vibes, samurai vs demon battles, and one hell of an arc after another, it’s no wonder why it became an instant favorite. Not to mention how the animation had pushed itself.

Jujutsu Kaisen

  • 2020
  • 24 eps
  • The story revolves around Yuji Itadori, who joins Jujutsu Sorcerers to eliminate a powerful curse that lives inside of him.
  • This anime made its way into the hall of legendary anime since its debut. The powers, the animation, Sukuna’s unleashed moments, and Gojo’s eyes.

Conclusion

Each generation will always have its best-released anime- and perhaps one day how the new one will be another icon- BUT every generation can also enjoy anime no matter which timeline. It’s a matter of preference and exploration for viewers to get their taste in anime.
